As our production and manufacturing increase to meet customer demand, we make it a priority to mitigate our environmental impact by identifying and implementing measures to help reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting from our facilities, transportation, and other aspects of our operations. As such, we have expanded our manufacturing capabilities to our European headquarters in Amersfoort, the Netherlands. This allows us to ship our products directly to European customers while reducing our carbon footprint.
In 2023, Applied Medical's global GHG emissions per product only increased by 1.9% compared to 2022.
Applied Medical has its own state-of-the-art sterilization facilities strategically located near our manufacturing operations in Southern California. We are expanding our capabilities by implementing a sterilization facility at our European manufacturing location in Amersfoort, the Netherlands. By utilizing on-site sterilization, we reduce product transportation and our carbon footprint while increasing our operational efficiencies.
Applied Medical designs, develops and manufactures our products in-house as part of our vertically integrated business model. By directly controlling and localizing our processes, we avoid freight-related emissions typically associated with outsourced manufacturing. Once a raw material arrives at our Southern California campus, the longest distance it travels from raw material to final, sterilized product is less than 40 miles. In addition, we have 11 owned-and-operated warehouses and distribution centers strategically located around the globe to decrease product transport and expedite delivery.
Applied Medical has installed electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at our campuses in Rancho Santa Margarita, California, and Amersfoort, the Netherlands, providing team members with the opportunity to charge their personal vehicles at work and promoting sustainability among commuters. In 2023, team members saved the equivalent of more than 600 metric tons of GHG emissions through the use of on-site charging (compared to gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles). In addition, our global campuses use electric company vehicles to further reduce emissions.
Our Amersfoort facility utilizes a thermal heating system to heat and cool our building, reducing GHG emissions by 91% in the summer compared to traditional temperature control systems.
